Rain

He hated the rain.

He hated the way it soaked his clothes and skin, leaving a chill he could never quite shake for the rest of the day.

He hated the way his shoes would squeak against the tiled floors of the buildings that his classes were held in, his toes frigid within soaking wet socks.

The rain made him tired and miserable and almost nothing could change that.

Almost, he thought to himself, doing his best to feign nonchalance as she took her usual seat in front of him, setting down her backpack and umbrella on the grey tiled floors. Apparently he wasn’t indifferent as he presumed himself to be, startling slightly as she turned to look at him, her eyes staring directly into his, as she smiled gently in greeting and took her seat.

“Nice weather, huh?”

She asked, nothing sarcastic or ingenuine in her tone as she turned to look at him fully, causing his face to warm slightly and silently pray she didn’t notice his brain totally fry from just a simple question.

“Uh, not really?” he said, phrasing it more as a question, “It’s raining?”

She began to laugh lightly and he immediately felt foolish, beginning to curl in on himself in embarrassment.

It’s raining? He thought, mentally kicking himself, Way to go dumbass.

“That is true,” she answered, thankfully ignoring his minor blunder, “But I happen to like the rain.”

“I kinda think it sucks.”

She laughed at his blunt declaration, not faltering even a little,

“Well, at least you're honest about it,” she responded, beginning to pull out her laptop in preparation for the start of class.

“What about you?” he forced out, not fully ready for the conversation to end just yet, “Why do you like it so much?”

Her eyes took on a slight shine as she turned to look at him once more, warmth seeping from her very being as she opened her mouth to speak. Her argument perfectly articulating the deep love she had for the dreary weather. He wasn’t fully sure what she was saying, he had gotten distracted by the dimples he just realized she had, they showed when she grinned wildly and she had never really looked at him this long before so he never noticed.

He hated the rain.

The way it soaked his skin and chilled him to the bone.

But seeing the way her eyes lit up when she talked about it, he just might have to change his mind.
